Despite the ban,Gulu Youth Tells Government they will continue wearing the Red Beret.

Youth in Gulu have said they will never bow down to the government policy banning the wearing of red beret arguing that it is their constitutional rights.
They say that the red beret is their fashion which they feel proud wearing and in no way it should be affiliated to any political group.
Government through the Uganda People`s Defence Force (UPDF) top organs designated the red beret as an official military clothing that could land members of the public who wear them in jail.
Brig. Richard Karemire, the UPDF Spokesperson says the 18th September gazette also bans the sale and wear of any clothing that resembles the army attire.
However youth in Gulu says they will continuously and defiantly wear the red beret without fear of arrest and prosecution since they will be exercising their freedom of expression.
Tonny Olanya Olenge, a resident of Laroo division said in an interview on Thursday that the ban is an abrogated rape of freedom of association and other liberties to be enjoyed by every Ugandan.
He explained that the UPDF cannot arrest anyone wearing the red beret as long as it does not have the army logo because it also a national colour entailed in the national flag and also a colour of martyrdom religiously.
Another youth, Samuel Obedi says he feels proud in the red beret and will continuously wear it since it not in any way affiliated to the UPDF as long as it has no UPDF emblem or logo.
He questioned which law in the constitution bans a citizen from wearing red attires and affiliates it to the army colour.
Letaru Tamar, a student of Gulu University said during an interview on Thursday that everyone is born with their personality and for her case she like red colour and the love can never be taken away by the army.
She wondered how the UPDF will arrest anyone wearing the red beret and what charges shall be preferred against them. Tamar urged government to stop politicking everything in the country.
Brian Ntambazi, the former contender for Gulu University Guild President argued that it is not illegal to put on a red beret because it is his right but it is illegal to put on a red beret with a UPDF symbol.
Red beret is widely used by the ‘’People Power Pressure Group’’ led by Kyadondo East Member of Parliament, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine. Bobi Wine early this year declared his intention to run for presidency in 2021.
However, Wilson Otim alias Bosmic Otim the Northern Youth Coordinator for ‘’People Power’’ says government should stop affiliating red attires to the group and give freedom to every citizen.
The beret is also worn by some soldiers especially the military Police which is a unit of the UPDF.
But the UPDF maintains that it is illegal to wear army attires and once found guilty of such they are liable to life imprisonment.
