Gulu, Uganda – October 7, 2025. The Northern Uganda community is mourning the death of Pastor Joseph Okidi, a respected gospel artist, minister, and lecturer at Gulu University. He passed away on October 6, 2025, at Kamala International Hospital in Kampala, where he had been receiving treatment following a serious motorcycle accident.
According to close family members, Pastor Okidi was involved in the accident on September 30, 2024, while returning from his farm in Amuru District. He sustained severe injuries and was first admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at St. Mary’s Hospital Lacor in Gulu. Due to the complexity of his condition, he was later transferred to Kamala International Hospital in Kampala, where he had remained under close medical supervision until his passing.
Pastor Okidi was well known not only for his music but also for his deep commitment to education and mentorship. At Gulu University, he lectured in the Faculty of Education and Humanities, where students and colleagues admired him for his humility, discipline, and passion for developing young minds.
In the music world, he rose to prominence with his gospel hit “Yoo Na Leng,” a song that resonated deeply with believers for its message of faith, hope, and perseverance. His blend of spiritual lyrics and cultural expression made him one of the most influential gospel voices from Northern Uganda.
Confirming the sad news, Mr. Gwaa Charles, the late pastor’s uncle, said the family is devastated by the loss and is coordinating with both the university and the church on burial arrangements. “We are heartbroken. Pastor Okidi was a pillar in our family and community. We ask for patience and prayers as we prepare to lay him to rest,” he said.
Tributes have poured in from Gulu University staff, students, fellow musicians, and church leaders who described him as a man of faith, wisdom, and compassion. Many highlighted his dual calling—using both education and music as tools to transform lives.
Pastor Joseph Okidi’s legacy as a teacher, minister, and gospel artist will continue to inspire generations to come. His voice may be silent, but his message of faith and hope will forever echo across Northern Uganda.
May His soul Rest in peace Amen.
